for a very long time, and I came back to New Orleans just in time for Mardi Gras,” she said. “Not really being sure what my next move was going to be.”
A video of her performing the song “Na Na Na” [see below] became something a viral hit on YouTube and remains impressive, 1.4 million views later. For a few years, the one-woman show became a big part of her life. And it kept her so busy that she didn’t really have much energy left to think about the follow-up.“I had been touring with ‘Hummingbird, Go!’ for a very long time, and I came back to New Orleans just in time for Mardi Gras,” she said. “Not really being sure what my next move was going to be.”She visited some friends and went to a parade. And then she found herself captivated by the empty, aimless moment that follows a parade.

“You have that sort of lull after all that happiness goes by,” she said. There’s litter everywhere, people picking up beads in the streets, an air of uncertainty and possibility.

“I think there’s a different side to Mardi Gras that people don’t think about so much,” she said. “The truth is that when a parade ends, it just kind of fizzles out. It just kind of goes away, and you’re left with this feeling of, ‘Was that it?’”

“That space is just an interesting place to be in,” she said. “I felt like it was a really good parallel to my life at the time, just sort of waiting for the next parade to roll in.”
