Galactic turns 18 and drops its first Mardi Gras album, plays the Crystal Ballroom
Oregon Music Newsby Timothy Deal

It doesn’t seem that long ago when I first heard the name Galactic mentioned during a set break at Tiptina’s. We were siting on the grassy neutral ground watching a scene spill out onto Napoleon Avenue, when somebody started talking about white kids who were playing Meters covers like “Africa” and “Cissy Strut.” Everyone in my krewe that night immediately dismissed them. The consensus was that a band calling themselves, Galactic Prophylactic, and riffing on Papa Funk classics seemed down right disrespectful. This was circa 1991 when Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Dirty Dozen, Funky Meters, Rebirth and Fish Head Music dominated the New Orleans late night scene.
